Best Dog Books: EYE OF THE WOLF by daniel pennac

Best Dog Books is a blog that features children’s books with key dog characters. Sometimes an adult dog book sneaks in but for the most part Best Dog Books aims to help kids, their parents, teachers, and librarians find dog books.

From the publisher:

Reminiscent of THE LITTLE PRINCE, Daniel Pennac’s fable of a boy and a wolf who dare to meet each other’s gaze unfolds with humor, poignancy, and philosophical resonance.
They were born worlds apart, the wolf from the Far North and the boy from Yellow Africa. Now all that separates them is a cage at the zoo. The wolf has lost much on his journey, including an eye and his beloved pack. But when he finally consents to trust the strange, still little boy who has been watching him – to meet his eye – their lives intersect with unforgettable results. Master storyteller Daniel Pennac weaves the events of two lives into a mythic tapestry that ultimately and magnificently reveals the fellowship of all creatures. Ten illustrations by Max Grafe enhance this fabulous translation from the French.

Lily Lo and The Wonton Maker by Frances Lee Hall

Around this time last year, the world lost a remarkable author, Frances Lee Hall, to a brain aneurysm. We, her writing group–Sharry Phelan Wright, Christine Dowd, Helen Pyne, Ann Jacobus, Frances, Linden McNeilly, and me–Annemarie O’Brien), were stunned and vowed that we would help Frances bring her middle grade novel, LILY LO AND THE WONTON MAKER to young readers.

(A ten-year-old) Mia Hamm meets The Joy Luck Club
Ten-year-old Lily Lo is on a quest to deal with her Gung Gung and his old-fashioned Chinese ways, all while trying to find her place alongside her soccer teammates and friends.

Frances was determined to bring diverse stories to young readers. She said she had rarely encountered a book in her childhood about a character or family like hers. She was thrilled when her agent, Marietta Zacker, sold her middle-grade novel, LILY LO AND THE WONTON MAKER, to Egmont USA in late 2013. Here is Frances post the sale of LILY LO AND THE WONTON MAKER to Egmont.

Sadly, the international publisher closed US operations a little over a year later and LILY LO, along with many other stories, never made it into print. Frances was in the process of resubmitting LILY LO when she passed away, and then her writing group took the reigns.

We found Inkshares, a hybrid publisher located in Oakland, that publishes books that attract 750 pre-orders to cover design, editing, production, and distribution costs. All proceeds from book sales beyond the initial funding amount (750 copies) will support the education fund of Frances’ and Lance’s daughter Emmie, who is now a sophomore in high school.

But we need your help to share this story and pre-order link to reach those who knew Frances. Please help us help Frances realize her dream of getting LILY LO AND THE WONTON MAKER into the hands of kids who need diverse books.

John Reynolds Gardiner’s classic action-packed adventure story about a thrilling dogsled race has captivated readers for more than thirty years.

Based on a Rocky Mountain legend, Stone Fox tells the story of Little Willy, who lives with his grandfather in Wyoming. When Grandfather falls ill, he is no longer able to work the farm, which is in danger of foreclosure. Little Willy is determined to win the National Dogsled Race—the prize money would save the farm and his grandfather. But he isn’t the only one who desperately wants to win. Willy and his brave dog Searchlight must face off against experienced racers, including a Native American man named Stone Fox, who has never lost a race.

Exciting and heartwarming, this novel has sold millions of copies and was named a New York Times Outstanding Children’s Book.
