Easter with Emma

Best Dog Books for Kids is a resource of great dog books to help librarians, teachers, parents, kids and other dog book advocates to find the next awesome read. Why have I created this list? My first love in life was a yellow lab named Emma. She belonged to our neighbor’s hippie son but used to wait for me everyday after school where the bus dropped me off. She was my best friend up until the day she died. That’s when I found solace in reading dog books. Most teachers and librarians pointed me to the same list of classic dog books like Lassie Come Home, Old Yeller, and The Incredible Journey. I read them all multiple times. But, eventually, I wanted other dog books to read.

Back then, the internet didn’t exist as a source for researching dog book titles so I started a haphazard list and shared it with my dog-loving friends. In honor of The 101 Dalmations, the first movie I ever saw and loved, I called my list the Top 101 Best Dog Books. Even though the list never grew larger than 24 titles.

Today, I have cultivated that list with the help of an algorithm and organized it by category such as: dog picture books, historical fiction about dogs, middle grade dog books, series about dogs, Newbery Medal books about dogs, the classics featuring a key dog character, Caldecott Medal books about dogs, as well as a section featuring authors who have written a number of dog books for kids. There’s also a Bonus Section at the end of this post that you might enjoy. If you click on the book cover, you’ll be directed to the book’s Amazon page. Good luck finding your next best dog book read from one of these categories below!

Happy reading!

Please note: I will update this list every three months as new dog books are published. So, do check back from time to time and if you don’t see your favorite dog book on this list, please send me a message with the title. I’ll be sure to add it to my spreadsheet and will plug it into my algorithm.

If you’re an author of a children’s book featuring a key canine character, please contact me. I’d be happy to feature you and your dog book on my blog, Best Dog Book author interviews.

best dog books for kidsWhite Star: A Dog on the Titanic written by Marty Crisp is a great read for anyone who loves a good dog hero or is fascinated by the history of the Titanic.

From the author:

White Star is the story of a fictional Irish setter who joins the dozen very real dogs who were on board the Titanic when the ship sailed on its maiden – or first – and as it turned out, last – voyage in April 1912.

This dramatic sea disaster has always fascinated people, with both poor immigrants and the rich-and-famous sailing on a ship some had dubbed “unsinkable.” Since the James Cameron movie “Titanic” came out in 1997 and won the Best Picture Oscar in 1998, history buffs have flocked to traveling exhibits of Titanic artifacts, and even whole museums devoted to the ship (in Southampton, England; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; Buena Park, California; Indian Orchard, Massachusetts; Orlando, Florida; Branson, Missouri; and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.)

It wasn’t until 1985 that the wreckage of the ship was finally discovered, two miles below the ocean’s surface.

White Star was the name of the shipping line, and the name of the fictional dog meant to represent that line in advertisements, much as RCA Victor ads of the time featured a terrier listening to “his master’s voice.” The company that owned Titanic never completely recovered from its association with the greatest ocean liner disaster of all time. The business was sold to Cunard Lines (still operating under the Carnival Cruise umbrella). Arguments continue to this day about how, exactly, the ship came to sink; exactly where the dog kennels were; and why more people weren’t loaded into the lifeboats – although there was never enough room for everybody. Maritime law was changed as a result so that today there must always be enough room in the lifeboats for everyone onboard, and lifeboat drills are mandatory on Day One of any voyage.

We’ll never know for sure if the dog kennels were on the boat deck, as many experts believe, or on F deck, many levels down, near the third class galley (kitchen). Since dogs were seen on deck and in the water at the time of the sinking, it’s hard to imagine them getting up to the boat deck from the depths of the tilting, filling-with-water ship. But more than a century later, people still argue about what-went-where and who-did-what.

She’s a Big Deal, and she likes it that way. Sometimes Cracker remembers when she was younger, and her previous owner would feed her hot dogs and let her sleep in his bed. That was nice, too.

Rick Hanski is headed to Vietnam. There, he’s going to whip the world and prove to his family and his sergeant — and everyone else who didn’t think he was cut out for war — wrong. But sometimes Rick can’t help but wonder that maybe everyone else is right. Maybe he should have just stayed at home and worked in his dad’s hardware store.

When Cracker is paired with Rick, she isn’t so sure about this new owner. He’s going to have to prove himself to her before she’s going to prove herself to him. They need to be friends before they can be a team, and they have to be a team if they want to get home alive.

BEST MIDDLE GRADE DOG BOOKS

best dog books for kidsSable written by Karen Hesse is the author of many books for children  and someone to check out.

From the publisher:

Tate is overjoyed when the scrawny mutt shows up, acting like she wants to stay. Tate even convinces Mam and Pap to let her keep the dog — that she names Sable for her dark, silky fur. But a well-fed Sable turns out to have quite a mind of her own, and soon she’s wandering off and stealing things: a rubber boot, a chocolate cake, a doormat. When neighbors complain, Pap, who is a carpenter, gives the dog away to one of his customers, a doctor who lives miles away.

Young Tate is determined to get her dog back. She single-handedly builds a fence that will keep her from wandering off, and then gets permission from her parents to “visit” Sable. When she gets there, however, she finds that the dog has been missing for weeks. Heartbroken, Tate returns home, only to find that her hard work has earned her new respect in the eyes of her reserved, aloof parents. Her father sees she has the makings of a carpenter herself; her mother realizes just how much the dog has meant to her. The renewal of their relationship is just the preparation needed for the surprise return of Sable, who has been, it seems, as anxious for a reunion as Tate has been.

Karen Hesse has written a simple, yet powerful story that will speak to young chapter-book readers, as effectively as her other novels — including the Newbery Medal-winning Out of the Dust — have spoken to their older siblings. Soft pencil drawings by acclaimed artist Marcia Sewall effectively evoke the characters and moods of this strong dog story.

When one of the handlers fails to close Rowf’s cage properly, the two dogs make a daring escape into the English countryside, where they befriend a red fox who helps them survive in the wild. But as rumors circulate that the dogs may have been the test subjects for biological weapons and could be carrying a terrible plague, they soon find themselves targets of a great dog hunt. Local farmers, politicians, scientists, and even the military join in the search to track them down. An unforgettable tale of fantasy and adventure, a powerful exploration of the limits of human cruelty and kindness, The Plague Dogs stands as a modern-day classic.

best dog books for kidsOld Yeller written by Fred Gipson is a Newbery Medal winning story that I read multiple times as a kid and tells the story of one of the most loyal fictional dogs ever written about. Check out the movie trailer here or listen to the first chapter here.

From the publisher:

When his father sets out on a cattle drive toward Kansas for the summer, fourteen-year-old Travis Coates is left to take care of his family and their farm. Living in Texas Hill Country during the 1860s, Travis comes to face new, unanticipated, and often perilous responsibilities in the frontier wilderness.

A particular nuisance is a stray yellow dog that shows up one day and steals food from the family. But the big canine who Travis calls “Old Yeller” proves his worth by defending the family from danger. And Travis ultimately finds help and comfort in the courage and unwavering love of the dog who comes to be his very best friend.

Fred Gipson’s novel is an eloquently simple story that is both exciting and deeply moving. It stands alongside works like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Where The Red Fern Grows, and Shiloh as a beloved and enduring classic of literature. Originally published in 1956 to instant acclaim, Old Yeller later inspired a hit film from Walt Disney. Just as Old Yeller inevitably makes his way into the Coates family’s hearts, this book will find its own special place in readers’ hearts.

best dog books for kidsCaddie Woodlawn written by Carol Ryrie Brink and illustrated by Kate Seredy.

From the publisher:

An illustrated edition of the Newberry Medal–winning Caddie Woodlawn, which has been captivating young readers since 1935.

Caddie Woodlawn is a real adventurer. She’d rather hunt than sew and plow than bake, and tries to beat her brother’s dares every chance she gets. Caddie is friends with Indians, who scare most of the neighbors—neighbors who, like her mother and sisters, don’t understand her at all.

Caddie is brave, and her story is special because it’s based on the life and memories of Carol Ryrie Brink’s grandmother, the real Caddie Woodlawn. Her spirit and sense of fun have made this book a classic that readers have taken to their hearts for more than seventy years.

Note: The book’s portrayal of Native Americans has been criticized in more recent years. Debbie Reese, founder of the website American Indians in Children’s Literature, shared her daughter’s pained reaction to reading it in school in “Reflections on Caddie Woodlawn: Teaching about Stereotypes using Literature.”

best dog books for kidsThe Underneath is written by Kathi Appelt and illustrated by David Small. It is more than just a dog story, it is also a wonderful classic American fantasy. Check out Kathi’s Best Dog Book Author Interview.

From the publisher:

There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road.

A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath…as long as they stay in the Underneath.

Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten’s one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O’Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love — and its opposite, hate — the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

The 101 Dalmations by Dodie Smith has a special place in my heart because it was the first movie I ever saw. I recall how much I worried about the pups and rooted for their parents to rescue them. Check out the movie trailer for the original version here.

best dog books for kidsThe Call of the Wild by Jack London is a story about the bond between a man and his dog that is set in the Yukon territory during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is classic and one of London’s most notable books. Check out the movie trailer starring Harrison Ford here.

From the publisher:

The novel’s central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in the Santa Clara valley of California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into the brutal existence of an Alaskan sled dog, he reverts to atavistic traits. Buck is forced to adjust to, and survive, cruel treatments and fight to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and lessons he learns, to emerge as a leader in the wild.London lived for most of a year in the Yukon collecting material for the book.

The story was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903; a month later it was released in book form. The novel’s great popularity and success made a reputation for London. Much of its appeal derives from the simplicity with which London presents the themes in an almost mythical form. As early as 1908 the story was adapted to film and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations.

best dog books for kidsWhite Fang by Jack London is about a wild half-dog half-wolf that becomes domesticated. It is a gripping tale told from the wolf-dog’s point of view about the hard life in the frozen wilds of the north. Check out the movie clip here.

From the publisher:

First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story details White Fang’s journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London’s best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild.

Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption.

BEST DOG BOOK THRILLERS FOR OLDER KIDS

Watchersbest dog book by Dean Koontz is one in which the author experienced pure joy writing. In an annotated bibliography in The Dean Koontz Companion, a book about his work, the bibliographer made the following observation about Watchers. “It embodies all of the major themes with which Koontz has been obsessed: the healing power of love and friendship; the struggle to overcome the past and change what we are; the moral superiority of the individual over the workings of the state and large institutions; the wonder of both the natural world and the potential of the human mind; the relationship of mankind to God; transcendence; and how we sustain hope in the face of our awareness that all things die.” If these fundamental issues tug at your heart strings, then this is the novel for you.

From the publisher:

A “superior thriller”(Oakland Press) about a man, a dog, and a terrifying threat that could only have come from the imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz—nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

On his thirty-sixth birthday, Travis Cornell hikes into the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. But his path is soon blocked by a bedraggled Golden Retriever who will let him go no further into the dark woods.

That morning, Travis had been desperate to find some happiness in his lonely, seemingly cursed life. What he finds is a dog of alarming intelligence that soon leads him into a relentless storm of mankind’s darkest creation…

Devotedbest dog book by Dean Koontz is a bestseller. Many of his fans talk about how Koontz’s love of Golden Retrievers are a key component of his appeal to readers. Devoted, like Watchers, does not disappoint.

From the publisher:

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

From Dean Koontz, the master of suspense, comes an epic thriller about a terrifying killer and the singular compassion it will take to defeat him.

“Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic.” —Associated Press

Woody Bookman hasn’t spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

Kipp is a uniquely gifted dog with a heart as golden as his breed. Kipp is also devoted beyond reason to people. When he hears the boy who communicates like he does, without speaking, Kipp knows he needs to find him before it’s too late.

Woody’s fearful suspicions are taking shape. A man driven by a malicious evil has set a depraved plan into motion. And he’s coming after Woody and his mother. The reasons are primal. His powers are growing. And he’s not alone. Only a force greater than evil can stop what’s coming next.

My first story (age 5)

** On the first day of kindergarten I came home from school and proudly showed everyone the first story I wrote and illustrated. It was about my family. I was also sporting my mother’s signature short-bangs haircut that she gave to me and my sisters. My mother claims we refused to wear barrettes, thus the short bangs.
